| The Effects of Irrigation and Fertilizer on Vetiver Establishment - Hawaii | Vetiver is touted for use in many soil and water conservation practices to reduce run-off, soil erosion, and to stabilize steep slopes. In order to perform these functions the plants must close in and form a barrier that will channel water and hold soil. Experiments at Kunia, Mililani and Waimanalo show the effects of irrigation and fertilizer on vetiver establishment. Irrigation was shown to have the greatest effect on establishment of vetiver, and only slightly noticeable changes were due to fertilizer. Irrigation was most important in dryer conditions and less in the areas that received greater annual rainfall, however still necessary in order to form an adequate barrier in time for the winter rains. |

Mangisoni covering 450 farmers indicates farmer preference for the Vetiver System. The Net Present Value Model has demonstrated that vetiver bunds are the most profitable and effective methods of combating soil erosion. The effectiveness of the vetiver bunds lies in the fact that they combine two technologies (bare contour bunds and vetiver grass) and the vetiver grass has an excellent rooting system. |

VETIVER GRASS, VETIVERIA ZIZANIOIDES: A CHOICE PLANT FOR PHYTOREMEDIATION OF HEAVY METALS AND ORGANIC WASTES |
Glasshouse and field studies showed that Vetiver grass can produce high biomass (>100t/tha-1 year-1) and highly tolerate extreme climatic variation such as prolonged drought, flood, submergence and temperatures (-15°-55°C), soils high in acidity and alkalinity (pH 3.3-9.5), high levels of Al (85% saturation percentage), Mn (578 mg kg-1), soil salinity (ECse 47.5 dS m-1), sodicity (ESP 48%), and a wide range of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn). Vetiver can accumulate heavy metals, particularly lead (shoot 0.4% and root 1%) and zinc (shoot and root 1%). The majority of heavy metals are accumulated in roots thus suitable for phytostabilization, and for phytoextraction with addition of chelating agents. Vetiver can also absorb and promote biodegradation of organic wastes (2,4,6-trinitroluene, phenol, ethidium bromide, benzo[a]pyrene, atrazine). Although Vetiver is not as effective as some other species in heavy metal accumulation, very few plants in the literature have a wide range of tolerance to extremely adverse conditions of climate and growing medium (soil, sand, and tailings) combined into one plant as vetiver. All these special characteristics make vetiver a choice plant for phytoremediation of heavy metals and organic wastes. Read more .. |

Report on the application of the Vetiver System in the Citarum River Basin, Indonesia.This report (1.4MB) by Truong and Booth demonstrates how vetiver can be used to solve to major problems realkting to river pollution: sediment inflow from hillside soil erosion; and pollution from domestic waste water flows into a river. This small pilot project if expanded could so much to solve river pollution, particularly in the upper (more rural) part of a river basin in many btopical countries. |

From Bio Clean Environmental Services - California. A project at Oceanside, California to treat wash down water from a harbor boat wash site, along with many little sewer spills coming from RVs on a continuous basis. It’s a very dirty site. Over 4000 pounds of oil laden sediment was removed from the pre-treatment chamber in the last two years. The system treats 2,000 to 8,000 gallons of water every day. Vetiver Grass was chosen because it has the ability to grow in saline water and the ability to deal with high pollutant loads, both as feature of the site. Vetiver was a great choice and a real success story. see details and data and field report (best). |
